Brunch weddings have become increasingly popular lately. Couples like them because they have a relaxed, family-friendly feel and because they are cheaper to host than a traditional wedding dinner. The clothes for an early-day wedding can be very different from the clothes for a formal wedding in the evening. This is what to wear to a brunch wedding.

Getting dressed in the morning can be a bit confusing. The usual tricks we use to make an outfit festive, such as sparkling jewelry, shimmering fabrics and the like, seem out of place for a brunch. However, a wedding at any time of the day is a special occasion, which is why a special outfit is required. The time of year also makes a difference as one would dress a little more formal for a winter brunch wedding than for a summer wedding.

Wedding attire for men is pretty simple. Nice trousers with a jacket and tie are ideal for brunch. When the wedding gets more casual, it’s easy enough to take off the jacket. Elegant slippers would be a good choice for shoes. In the morning, male wedding guests are welcome to experiment with more colors and patterns than at a formal evening reception. Whimsical ties, shirts with little checks or colors other than white, and even fun socks (think Argyle) would all be great.

Female wedding guests have more leeway in what they wear, which makes dressing funnier but also more confusing. For a summer brunch wedding, a knee-length dress or skirt with a floral pattern would be pretty. It can be worn with cute flats or pretty low sandals, pearl earrings and a small handbag. Even during the day, your everyday wallet isn’t stylish enough for a wedding. So choose something like a cute little cloth-covered clutch bag. Other accessories to consider include a small cardigan or wrap over a dress and possibly a smart wide-brimmed hat with a ribbon. The hat is great for an outdoor brunch wedding and helps create a simpler sundress style. For a morning wedding, stay away from jewelry or clothing that has lots of pearls or sparkles.

If the brunch wedding falls in the winter months, plan to dress up a bit more. A nice jacquard dress would be ideal. Or look for the chic combination of skirt and jacket made of elegant fabric that goes well with a silk or cashmere shell. Look for a skirt or dress that falls slightly below the knee rather than the floor. Another great option is tailored velvet pants with satin flats and a cashmere sweater. Black is pretty tough for a morning wedding, so look for clothes in other colors. Deep winter tones like plum, chocolate and forest are just as beautiful as neutral colors like pewter or champagne.

Fall weddings tend to be very difficult to dress as they fall between the summer sundresses and the rich fabrics of the Christmas season. For a fall wedding, think cozy. A flattering wrap dress with sleek high-heeled boots and a lovely pair of pear-bead earrings would do nicely. A wool skirt worn with a silk blouse or cashmere sweater would be another option, as long as the pieces aren’t too business-like or too casual. In other words, a pink tweed skirt and a fitted chocolate brown sweater with a pretty bow would be nice, but the gray skirt from a suit or the heavy fisherman’s sweater would be too business-like or too casual.

The brunch wedding trend is likely to grow in popularity, so knowing what to wear to this type of celebration is helpful. As with any wedding, instead of putting in too little effort, dress up a little too much. Avoid evening wear like cocktail dresses, low cut tops and too much sheen and you will look wonderful for the brunch reception.
