On September 12, 1953, more than sixty years ago, Jackie Bouvier walked down the aisle at Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church to marry John F. Kennedy, the future President of the United States, then Massachusetts Senator Junior. The bride chose an ivory silk-taffeta gown with a portrait neckline and full bouffant skirt for the occasion, a dress that would take its place in history as one of the classic marriage dresses. But while famous wedding dresses were perhaps known in the years that followed not only by who wore them, but by who designed them, in the contemporary lore surrounding Kennedy, the tailor who made Kennedy’s gown, Ann Lowe, remained relatively anonymous because oh her skin color.
